The 3rd winner of the St Leger, held on Tuesday 22nd September 1778 over the 2 miles of Town Moor, was Hollandaise, a grey filly by Match'em out of Virago, owned by Sir Thomas Gascoigne. The winner’s first race was the St Leger Stakes when she was fancied to do well and was made the 5/2 second favourite. She is aid to have won with ease, but then had a year off before returning in 1780 to win a 500 Guineas Match at Newmarket. Subsequent fine wins in 1781 marked her out as an above average mare. |
