DONCASTER ST LEGER 1778

The 3rd winner of the St Leger, held on Tuesday 22nd September 1778 over the 2 miles of Town Moor, was Hollandaise, a grey filly by Match'em out of Virago, owned by Sir Thomas Gascoigne. A field of 8 runners contested the race, although there were 16 subscriptions of 25 guineas each, which was worth 400 Guineas. (Equivalent to £63,900 in 2017)

The winner’s first race was the St Leger Stakes when she was fancied to do well and was made the 5/2 second favourite. She is aid to have won with ease, but then had a year off before returning in 1780 to win a 500 Guineas Match at Newmarket. Subsequent fine wins in 1781 marked her out as an above average mare.
